York Trials Unit (YTU) is one of the UK’s leading centres for the design and analysis of randomised controlled trials. Due to the continued success of the Unit, we are seeking to expand our team of medical statisticians and appoint a new Statistician at Grade 6.

YTU is a UKCRC registered trials unit undertaking national and international, scientifically rigorous, trials in a variety of areas whilst having a strong methodological portfolio associated with the conduct and analysis of trials. YTU undertake trials in a range of subject areas including surgery, mental health, musculoskeletal disorders, social care, education and public health.

YTU is seeking an enthusiastic individual to contribute to the design and analysis of their trials and collaborate with colleagues on research projects, grant applications and creating impact. It is envisaged that you will already have research experience in an area that would deepen, compliment and/or extend the existing research activity within the Trials and Statistics group, and across the wider Department. You will be expected to have a demonstrable track record of conducting high quality research focusing on the design and analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Role

• Conduct high-quality statistical analysis of trials and other research studies.
• Perform statistical programming for checking, manipulating, summarising and analysis data.
• Provide statistical expertise at all stages of research studies supported by YTU, from inception to analysis.
• Conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the publication of research output.
• Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications Needed

• First degree (usually 2:1 or above) in a mathematics and/or statistics.
• Higher degree in a relevant mathematics and/or statistics e.g. medical statistics or, exceptionally, substantial experience at an equivalent level.
• Knowledge of a range of statistical techniques and methodologies.
• Knowledge of how to design and analyse data from randomised controlled trials.
• Knowledge in statistics to engage in high quality research.
• Research expertise in an area which will complement and enhance the Department’s research strategy and goals.
• Ability to program using a range of computer software packages including at least one of the following: SPSS, Stata, SAS, R or a similar mainstream statistical package.
• Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research.
• Experience of writing up research work for publication.
• Experience of analysing data from randomised trials.
