Role Profile

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is seeking to appoint a Technical Officer / Senior Technical Officer to underpin CNC Machining and Design activities in the school while also enhancing and developing digital manufacturing.

The successful individual will join a team of Technical Officers with responsibility for support of manufacturing and workshop equipment and laboratories in the School. The successful individual will have excellent technical, communication and interpersonal skills, a flexible approach to work and a willingness to assist with new developments in line with Faculty/University Strategy.

Our technical staff support undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research students through the deployment and enhancement of our workshop and laboratory infrastructure, and technical support for standard and specialised experiments and through contributions to the wider activities of the School.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Candidates for Technical Officer must hold an Honours Degree or equivalent (NFQ Level 8) in Mechanical Engineering or have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a modern mechanical engineering workshop working as a Toolmaker/Fitter/Turner.
  • Candidates for Senior Technical Officer must hold a Master's degree or equivalent (NFQ Level 9) in Mechanical Engineering or have a minimum of 8 years’ experience in a modern mechanical engineering workshop working as a Toolmaker/Fitter/Turner.
  • Experience in the programming and operation of CNC machines is essential as is the ability to use 2D and 3D CAD software and CNC programming-based software.
  • Strong record of appropriate technical competence and hands-on experience in a specialised high precision workshop environment.
  • Excellent IT Skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of health and safety legislation, as it pertains to workshop facilities.
  • Excellent interactive verbal and written communication skills with experience of working, collaborating and establishing credibility and relationship at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise work, work to tight deadlines and take responsibility for project deliverables.

Desirable

  • Applicants would ideally have a minimum of 4 years’ relevant experience.
  • Experience with supporting teaching and/or training activities and/or a willingness to generate and engage with online teaching platforms and technology-assisted learning is desirable.

Salary Scale:

TO/STO - €41,736 - €72,655

Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.
