Student Mental Health Adviser (Maternity Cover)

About the role

This is an exciting time to join the Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service at Imperial College! We have been investing heavily in our Service to better support our students through university life. We have grown from a small team to a diverse and multifaceted group of over forty-one professionals striving to deliver the best experience possible for our students.

As a Student Mental Health Advisor, you will provide specialist, evidence-based support to Imperial students with moderate to severe mental health difficulties, helping them to engage with their studies and thrive at university. You will assess risk, develop safety/support plans, and liaise across NHS and College services to ensure coordinated care and safeguarding. You will also contribute to training and good practice across the university community.

What you would be doing

• Managing a caseload of students with moderate to severe and/or enduring mental health difficulties and supporting them during their time at university
• Assess risk of suicide and self-harm and ensure students are connected to NHS / third sector support as needed
• Working with students to create and implement safety and support plans. Make an initial assessment as to suitability for brief counselling, mental health advice, mental health intervention and/or mental health study mentoring as appropriate
• Respond to complex situations/incidents at the request of the Senior Mental Health Adviser and/or senior College staff through consultation and attendance where appropriate
• Encourage students to be socially engaged by providing one to one support and actively encouraging interaction with university and community services
• Positively promote independent living, symptom management and social inclusion by providing support with daily living skills, such as budgeting, organisation, time management, positive sleep routine and encouraging individuals to attend lectures, meetings, appointments etc.

What we are looking for

• Full professional registration/accreditation in relevant field (Psychology/Social Work/Occupational Therapy/Mental Health Nursing/ Psychotherapy or equivalent).
• Competence in working with clients in crisis, with advanced assessment skills
• Experienced in providing advice and support to those with acute and enduring mental health difficulties, and the academic and professional community around them
• A flexible and collaborative clinician with a student-centred approach
