About the Role
As a Buildings Operative, you will play a key role in ensuring the safety, comfort, and presentation of our campus facilities. Working within a collaborative and supportive team, you will carry out a wide range of general repairs and maintenance tasks across the University estate, ensuring that accommodation and teaching spaces are maintained to a high standard.

You’ll also conduct routine room checks, support planned maintenance programmes, and respond promptly to repair requests – helping us provide a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and guests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out general repairs across a range of trades (e.g. basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, tiling, and furniture repairs).
  • Conduct room checks, inspections, and condition surveys across student accommodation and teaching spaces.
  • Complete both reactive and planned maintenance tasks in line with University standards.
  • Respond to work requests efficiently and maintain accurate records using handheld devices.
  • Support University events and participate in the on-call rota for emergency out-of-hours support.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, contractors, and other stakeholders to maintain a high-quality estate.
  • Uphold all health and safety regulations, including risk assessments and safe systems of work.

What We’re Looking For

  • A recognised trade qualification (e.g., NVQ, City & Guilds) or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in mechanical and/or electrical services and general building maintenance.
  • Good IT skills and the ability to use handheld devices for job tracking.
  • A team player with strong communication skills and a proactive approach.
  • Ideally, a full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and participate in the out-of-hours call-out rota.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in plumbing or electrical trades.
  • Experience with NICEIC or Gas Safe regulations.
  • Health & Safety accreditation.
  • Broad multi-trade experience and commitment to continued professional development.
