Introduction to YSJ university
York St John University is a dynamic and ambitious institution at the heart of historic York, known for its commitment to widening participation, academic excellence, and community impact. We are one of the fastest-growing universities in the UK, with a strategy that places inspirational learning and applied research at the centre of everything we do. Our students benefit from a supportive, inclusive environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, professional development, and meaningful engagement with real-world challenges.
The School
Law is a growing and dynamic part of York Business School. Our LLB programme, launched in 2018, has developed rapidly, and in 2020 we established the York St John Law Clinic, which gives students hands-on experience in providing legal advice under the guidance of experienced staff. The Law Clinic is embedded within our teaching, enabling students to apply legal principles to realistic cases, build practical skills, and gain confidence in professional practice. Across our programmes, we emphasise skills development, employability, and placing law in context to support analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic Lecturer to contribute to our vibrant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Your work will be a mix of supervising students in a law clinic or similar practical setting and teaching in a variety of settings including lectures, small group tutorials / seminars. There is an expectation that all staff deliver pastoral and academic tutoring to students. The successful candidate will be supported to build and develop their research profile.
Required Skills and Experience
Candidates should be experienced in supervising students in practical settings, ideally in a Law Clinic, and have recent Law practice of their own to inform their teaching.
We are looking for expertise in two or more of the following areas of law: mental health law, conveyancing, medical law, property law, or asylum and immigration, as well as some teaching experience. Candidate should have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or demonstrate willingness to undertake it.
The ideal candidate would be a Solicitor or Barrister with practicing certificates, or have a relevant PhD alongside student supervision in a Law Clinic.
We offer an opportunity to work in a supportive and innovative academic environment, supervise and shape the next generation of legal professionals, and join a collaborative team committed to excellence in teaching, student experience, and applied learning.
