Pembroke College wishes to appoint a part-time College Lecturer (Career Development) in Computer Science from 1 October 2026 for a fixed term of two years. This post is designed as a career development opportunity, enabling early career academics to build teaching and administrative experience while continuing to develop their research profile.
Pembroke has a vibrant and supportive academic community, and the postholder will work closely with Professor Ana Namburete and other colleagues in Computer Science. You will benefit from mentoring and a structured personal development plan, alongside opportunities to engage with a dynamic cohort of students and researchers.
All teaching at Pembroke is delivered in small groups, typically tutorials of two or three students and classes of up to six. You will teach first- and second-year undergraduates reading Computer Science or Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as visiting students from partner universities in the USA, Hong Kong, and China.
You will be expected to contribute to teaching in the following areas:
Linear Algebra
Functional Programming
Design and Analysis of Algorithms
Algorithms and Data Structures
The role involves an average of up to six hours of (unweighted) teaching per week during term time, alongside setting and marking weekly problem sheets and College examinations (Collections), and writing termly reports on student progress.
In addition to teaching, you will contribute to the wider academic life of the College. This includes participating in undergraduate admissions, supporting student welfare, attending review meetings, contributing to open days and access initiatives, and engaging in College events. The postholder will also be expected to remain actively engaged in research.
The stipend will be in the range of £16,905–£18,669 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications (2025–26 rates, subject to annual uplift). The post also includes a generous benefits package, including:
A personal research and teaching allowance of £2,625 per annum
Membership of the USS pension scheme
An entitlement to take five meals per week in College
Access to teaching facilities
Mentoring and career development support
This position is particularly well suited to candidates in the later stages of doctoral study or early career academics seeking to consolidate teaching experience within a collegiate university environment.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a doctorate in Computer Science or a closely related field, and should have relevant teaching experience and the ability to deliver high-quality small-group teaching in some or all of the areas listed above. You should also be willing to undertake the associated administrative and pastoral responsibilities.
The terms and conditions of the post, together with its Further Particulars, are available at: https://www.pmb.ox.ac.uk/work-with-us (the University Terms and Conditions referred to on this webpage do not apply to this post).
Applicants should submit their Curriculum Vitae and a covering letter electronically to the Academic HR Officer (academichr@pmb.ox.ac.uk) by 9am on Tuesday 2 June 2026. Please include the names and contact details of two referees who we can contact if you are invited to an interview.
