Associate or Full Professor in Data-Driven Sustainability Assessment and Management

Modul University Vienna – School of Sustainability, Governance, and Methods

Modul University Vienna is seeking an outstanding scholar for an Associate or Full Professor position (depending on the qualifications) with outstanding qualifications in the field of integrated sustainability assessment methods with a focus on areas such as: cutting-edge quantitative analytical sustainability techniques and models; analysis and visualization of global environmental, social and economic datasets; quantifying and ranking spatial environmental impacts and performance; sustainability impact assessment; decision support systems both data- and theory-driven; sustainable digital transformation, etc.

The position is integrated in the School of Sustainability, Governance, and Methods and the applicants are supposed to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of sustainability assessment and analytics and to teach in undergraduate, graduate and PhD courses offered in Vienna (see www.modul.ac.at/study-programs). This is a full‐time, unlimited contract position where applicants are prepared to work 40 hours per week.

Associate or Full Professor in Data-Driven Sustainability Assessment and Management 

Full-time (40 h/w) in Vienna, Austria

Responsibilities

  • Acquiring and conducting third-party funded national and international research projects with the aim of further developing their own research agenda in the field of sustainability assessment.
  • Teaching and conducting examinations independently in English at all levels (bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D./doctorate, and executive education). The teaching load for this position is planned to be 5 units/week per semester (1 unit = 45 minutes of teaching), i.e., 10 units/week per year. The actual teaching load will depend on the profile of the candidate.
  • This position foresees a particular teaching responsibility in the MSc program Data Science for Sustainability, including courses for example Measuring and Assessing Sustainability; Sustainability Analytics Project; Modeling Sustainability Systems
  • Actively contributing to the development of Modul University’s various teaching programs.
  • Supervision of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral theses.
  • Participation in the self-governance of Modul University Vienna, which includes an active contribution to administrative and academic services and an active contribution to the university’s third mission.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field and to have outstanding qualifications:

  • Venia docendi or foreign equivalent or an equivalent subject-relevant academic qualification
  • Social science background with a focus in interdisciplinary sustainability science
  • Expertise in quantitative sustainability assessment methods such as environmental and social LCA, MFA, circularity and absolute sustainability assessment, environmentally extended Input-Output analysis, MCDA, etc.
  • Evidence of outstanding research ability and potential, through a record of publications in top-tier journals and participation in relevant third party-funded national and/or international empirical research projects; the candidate is expected to submit a research portfolio including a list of the five most important peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience, competence and established commitment to high quality teaching, guidance in scientific work and supervision of PhD students; the candidate is expected to submit a teaching portfolio.
  • Ability to teach courses, for example measuring and assessing sustainability; sustainability analytics project; modeling sustainability systems; environmental sciences and systems; quantitative research methods
  • Experience in successful acquisition, execution, and management of third-party funded research projects.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary team collaboration.
  • Activities in scientific networks like international professional societies and other research networks.
  • Interpersonal skills include gender and diversity management skills, communication and team, and leadership skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and proficiency in German language is welcome and the willingness to learn German in the first two years.

This is a full‐time, unlimited contract position where applicants are prepared to work up to 40 hours per week (with overtime hours). The initial annual gross salary is EUR 80,000 for an Associate Professor and EUR 108,000 for a Full Professors (plus approx. 30% contribution to the social security and pension fund paid by the employer according to Austrian Law), with additional remuneration for extra teaching or supervision of theses.
