Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Computing (Industry Experience)

Manchester Metropolitan University – Department of Computing and Mathematics

Thinking about a change from industry?

If you're an experienced software engineer who enjoys mentoring others, reviewing code, or helping junior developers grow, this could be your next step.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, you'll have the opportunity to shape the next generation of software engineers, bringing your real-world experience into a modern, industry-focused learning environment.

Why Make the Move to Education?

  • Make a real impact - help students and apprentices launch successful careers in tech
  • Stay hands-on with modern development - teach current tools, frameworks, and practices
  • Better work-life balance - a more sustainable pace than many industry roles, including generous holiday entitlement of 35 days plus bank holidays and 3-4 discretionary Christmas closure days.
  • Share your expertise - turn your experience into meaningful teaching and mentoring
  • Structured career progression - clear pathway from Lecturer to Professor (education-focused)
  • Support to transition - we'll help you develop as an educator, even if you've never taught before

About the Role

You'll design and deliver engaging, practical teaching across Levels 3-7 (foundation to postgraduate), including our highly regarded degree apprenticeships.

This isn't purely theoretical teaching—you'll:

  • Teach modern software engineering practices (e.g. Agile, DevOps, cloud, full-stack development)
  • Work with apprentices employed in industry, bringing real-world challenges into the classroom
  • Design hands-on projects and coding-based learning experiences
  • Help students build the skills employers actually need

You'll be part of a collaborative academic team that values innovation, industry relevance, and student success.

  • A desire to share your knowledge and support student success
  • The ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly

Qualifications
