The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Applied and Computational Mathematics to work with Dr Debasish Das on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project Active Self-Propelled Helices. The project will develop mathematical and computational models for helical microswimmers in three-dimensional fluids. It will focus on high-fidelity numerical simulations to study how geometry, hydrodynamics, and externally applied electric fields influence particle dynamics. The post offers an opportunity to contribute to research at the interface of applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, active matter, and scientific computing.

Applicants should have a strong background in applied and computational mathematics, with expertise in fluid mechanics being highly desirable. Experience in developing numerical methods for partial differential equations will also be advantageous. The successful candidate will join an active and supportive research environment and contribute to internationally relevant work in modern mathematical modelling. The position is available for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension to a total of three years, subject to satisfactory performance.

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of Dr Debasish Das, you will develop research objectives, play a lead role in relation to a specific project or part of a broader project, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, and contribute to the development of new research methods. You will write up research work for publication in collaboration with your team members and disseminate the results through peer-reviewed journal publications and presentations at conferences.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline like Mathematics, Engineering or Physics. You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in applied and computational mathematics and a developing ability to conduct individual research work and disseminate results. You will be able to plan and organise your own workload effectively and work within a team environment.

Whilst a Postdoctoral Research Associate is ideally sought for this position, applications from candidates who are close to PhD completion or whose award is pending are welcome. In such circumstances, the appointment will be made at Research Assistant level, Grade 6, and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post. This will continue until the PhD award is confirmed, at which point the duties and grade will be revised accordingly.

For any informal enquiries, please contact Debasish Das, Lecturer in Applied Mathematics (debasish.das@strath.ac.uk).
