About us

The Department of Translational Neuroscience and Stroke at UCL focuses on understanding neurological diseases and developing innovative treatments to improve patient outcomes through multidisciplinary research.

As part of this work, UCL is launching a five-year, Medical Research Council-funded Deep Network Modelling in Neuro-oncology programme. The project aims to improve prediction of patient outcomes, support personalised treatments, and advance understanding of disease mechanisms to inform future therapies.

The project will develop and apply advanced modelling techniques to high-dimensional clinical and imaging data, delivering real-world applications across the neuro-oncology landscape. Embedded within the High-Dimensional Neurology Group, which offers strong infrastructural and computational support, this work is led by Dr James Ruffle, who oversees the neuro-oncology research stream.

About the role

We are seeking a talented researcher to join a major neuro-oncology initiative using AI and network modelling to advance brain tumour research. You will work with unique datasets to develop tools for personalised prediction, treatment planning, and understanding disease mechanisms.

This role offers an opportunity to strengthen an academic career in translational research or transition into industry through spin-outs or established enterprises.

As a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow, you will help shape and lead the research programme, contributing to data governance, advanced modelling (including NLP and multimodal imaging), data visualisation, publications, and major grant applications. You will also support strategic direction, mentor junior researchers, supervise students, and collaborate across interdisciplinary teams.

The post is available immediately and funded by the Medical Research Council for one year in the first instance with the possibility of extension to 30 September 2030.

For a full job description please visit UCL’s online recruitment portal (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/work-at-ucl/search-ucl-jobs) and search using vacancy reference B02-10566. To apply, please upload a current CV, complete the online application form, and use the supporting statement section or upload a cover letter to outline how you meet the essential and desirable criteria for the role. Please do not upload any additional attachments as these will not be considered by the selection panel.

About you

To be successful at Research Fellow level, you will hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, or have equivalent industry experience. Strong expertise in machine learning, network neuroscience, or related computational modelling is essential.

For Senior Research Fellow level, you will also have postdoctoral experience and a strong track record of first-author publications or success in securing research funding.

You should have strong Python programming skills and experience working with large, high-dimensional datasets. You will be motivated by scientific discovery and translation into neuro-oncology applications, and be able to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team.

What we offer

Starting salary offered at Research Fellow/UCL Grade 7 (£45,103 - £52,586 per annum including London Allowance) or Senior Research Fellow/UCL Grade 8 (£54,931 per annum including London Allowance), dependent on skills and experience.

Appointment as Research Fellow is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be as Research Assistant (salary £39,148 - £41,833 per annum) with appointment as Research Fellow being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
