Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 15th May 2026

This is an exciting opportunity for doctors to join a team of facilitators delivering the small group programme at Plymouth Medical School, based in Plymouth, Torbay or Taunton. We are seeking clinicians to facilitate small groups of students within Reflective Practice.

About the role:

You will be expected to facilitate two groups within the same year group. Each session attracts paid administrative time for planning and assessment. Successful applicants will also act as academic tutors for up to five individual students; this role is also remunerated.

This is initially a one-year post, with the opportunity to review continuation in small group medical education depending on curriculum and medical school needs in the following academic year.

You will facilitate small group learning within Professional Development Groups (PDGs), where students share and explore clinical experiences with a focus on reflective practice and professionalism.

We currently have vacancies for Year 4 PDG Facilitators in Plymouth. Sessions take place on Fridays from 3–5pm at the John Bull Building near Derriford Hospital. There are 20 sessions in total (10 per group for two alternating groups).

Session dates:

18 September 2026, 25 September 2026, 9 October 2026, 16 October 2026, 23 October 2026, 6 November 2026, 13 November 2026, 20 November 2026, 18 December 2026.

15 January 2027, 22 January 2027, 29 January 2027, 5 February 2027, 12 February 2027, 26 February 2027, 5 March 2027, 16 April 2027, 30 April 2027, 14 May 2027, 21 May 2027.

If you are not available on Fridays in Plymouth but are interested in small group teaching on other days or sites, please still apply. Other opportunities may arise which you could take up if successful at interview.

Groups by site:

Professional Development Groups run on various days depending on year group and site (Plymouth, Torbay and Taunton). Each group delivers 7–10 two-hour sessions per year, equating to 14–20 sessions annually when facilitating two groups. Additional administrative time is paid per session and for assessments.

Sessions run on fixed, regular weekdays during university term times (which may differ from school terms).

Posts at some sites are very limited, so please clearly state your preferred days and locations in your application.

You should:

  • Medically qualified, GMC registered, and currently or recently (within four years) practising in the South West.
  • Be interested in education and teaching experience are essential; previous small group facilitation experience is desirable.

Induction and annual in-service training will be provided, and support from a close-knit team makes this an excellent opportunity to engage in medical education.

For informal enquiries, contact PDG Co-Leads:

You must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Further details are available in the job description.

In your covering letter or personal statement, please indicate the role(s) you are interested in, your site preference, and preferred teaching days. You should also detail how you meet the person specification criteria.
