About the role

The Department of English at the University of Sussex is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in English and Creative Writing for a fixed-term position to cover the period of Professor Matthew Dimmock’s Leverhulme Research Fellowship.

This post will make a significant contribution to the Department’s Creative Writing provision, alongside teaching in English Literature. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine expertise in pre-1800 literatures or historically informed approaches to writing with a strong profile in fiction writing.

About you

The successful candidate will play a central role in delivering our undergraduate Creative Writing curriculum, while also contributing to other teaching in historical literature modules. We particularly welcome applications from published fiction writers with experience of teaching Creative Writing, or with clear evidence of the ability to do so at a high level.

You will join a thriving, collegial Department with a strong commitment to both literary studies and Creative Writing. Sussex has a vibrant and expanding Creative Writing provision, and this post offers an opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and growing area of our undergraduate curriculum, shaping students’ development as writers within a critically informed literary environment.

Candidates should have UK teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postrgraduate level, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work productively as part of a collaborative and supportive Department. This is a teaching-focused role, though applicants should demonstrate an ongoing engagement with their field, including (where appropriate) practice-based research.
