Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to join the teaching team on the Certificate of Higher Education, BSc Foundation Year and BA Programmes this Autumn 2026.

Joining the School of Psychological Sciences, you would teach on the following module:

  • Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Psychology, Level 4
  • 22 hours of teaching
  • Thursday afternoon 2-4pm or evenings 6-8pm (Please indicate preference in your application or during interview).

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and undertake all related course administrative duties as required.

Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment the Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Psychology module, which is a Level 4 module offered as part of our Certificate of Higher Education, Accelerated Foundation Year and BA programmes.

The module aims to introduce students to the theoretical and conceptual concepts that form the basis of the discipline of psychology, including contributions from key thinkers.

The module will provide students with a solid understanding of the theories that set the foundations for the key areas identified by the British Psychological Society for undergraduate study and prepare students for future modules specific to these areas, ranging across biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, individual differences, and social psychology.  

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • A degree in Psychology.   
  • Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector.
  • A good understanding of the needs of full and part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm. 
  • Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.  
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.
  • A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle & Teams.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract:
