Head of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication

Birkbeck, University of London - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £80,000 to £90,000
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st July 2026
Closes: 14th September 2026

Founded in 1823 to give working Londoners and learners from non-traditional backgrounds the chance of a university education, Birkbeck continues to advance its unique mission while introducing new learning opportunities for new students. As Birkbeck moves into its third century, we are now seeking a new Head of School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication (CCC). CCC brings together English and Liberal Arts; Creative Writing; Film, Media and Journalism; Languages and Linguistics; and Performing Arts and Creative Industries. Based in Gordon Square, it boasts an exciting range of performing arts spaces, including the Peltz Gallery, a cinema and the Derek Jarman Lab. With around 70 academic staff and 900 students, the School has a strong research and teaching offering.

Reporting to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Head of School will take up post at an important moment in the School’s development. As Birkbeck launches its new Corporate Strategy for 2026-31, the post-holder will have the opportunity to work closely with creative industries and civic partners, deepening relationships and strengthening employability. They will lead the School into REF2029, strengthening an already excellent research environment, and continue to build on the School’s teaching offer and student experience. The new Head of School will bring a creative attitude to the use of CCC’s unique creative spaces, housed within the Creative Practice Lab; they will develop further opportunities around AI, VR, and the creative industries.

Strong candidates will bring a demonstrable track-record of academic leadership and management in a relevant discipline. They will have the research credibility to support academic colleagues and the breadth of outlook to lead a broad-ranging, interdisciplinary School. They will bring a strong commitment to arts and humanities subjects in the current climate and an appreciation for Birkbeck’s distinctive mission. Ideal candidates will bring line management experience and have an understanding of both organisational and cultural change. They will have a creative and innovative attitude, with a particular focus on employability. Strong candidates will be excellent all-rounders, with expertise across research, teaching and student experience.
