The role

The School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering (CADE) is seeking to make a permanent appointment to the position of Associate Professor or Professor of Dynamics and Control.

Suitable candidates for the post will have a strong academic and/or industrial background in research. Applicants must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of their research specialism, ideally around experimental structural dynamics. They must have clear plans to develop their research, and how this will link to and expand existing activities.

This post will be linked to our undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses in Aerospace Engineering, which are ranked in the top 5 nationally. The successful candidate will be expected to organise and potentially lead aspects of the teaching of these programmes.

If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology and eager to collaborate with leading experts in the field, we encourage you to apply. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Grade L (Associate Professor) or Grade M (Professor) position, based on skills, experience, and qualifications.

What will you be doing?

Role holders will be responsible for research, teaching, and related administration, at both undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels. The role will entail leadership in developing and overseeing research and teaching activities at all levels. Role holders will make a significant leadership and/or management contribution in research and teaching. Appointees should demonstrate a proven track record in independent teaching and research, securing external funding, developing long-term strategic plans, and contributing to management and leadership activities.

For appointment at Professorial level, candidates are expected to demonstrate a sustained and clearly evidenced track record of securing and leading independent research grant applications, delivering high-quality research outputs, and successfully building and managing research teams. They should also demonstrate extensive networks and significant experience in teaching and supervision as well as evidence of strategic research leadership.

The main purpose of this position is to:

  • conduct high-quality research in structural dynamics as applied to engineering problems.
  • develop and deliver high-quality teaching in aerospace engineering and support the management of the programmes.

The position will also provide effective academic administration within the CADE School of Engineering. The post will be on Pathway 1 (see Section 7 in Further Particulars).

You should apply if

  • A strong research background in structural dynamics as applied to complex engineering systems relevant to the School. These could include, but are not limited to, aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, wind engineering, space technology or advanced manufacturing.
  • A proven ability to lead and fund an independent research programme, through effective collaboration with others.
  • A clear and innovative strategic research programme with a vision that complements and enhances current activities within the CADE School.
  • A passion for teaching and the ability to develop and deliver engaging, high-quality education in Aerospace Engineering, in collaboration with others.

If you have a desire to make a significant impact through both your research and teaching, we encourage you to apply.
