Introduction to YSJ University
York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York, and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.
As one of the fastest-growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world and a more prosperous region.
The School
The School of Humanities offers a range of degree programmes across ten subject areas, as well as a Foundation Year in Liberal Arts. We have a diverse PGT portfolio and a rapidly growing PGR community. We are active in projects involving decolonising the curriculum, work-related learning, and supportive and inclusive pedagogies. We have a thriving research community with a combination of early career researchers and active senior researchers. With around 80 staff in the School in total, we are a friendly and collegiate community.
The Role
As a Lecturer in Media and Film, you will contribute to the delivery and development of our programmes. You will play an active role in sustaining the School’s strong reputation for excellent teaching. The role involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules which incorporate a range of screen cultures, supervising research projects, and contributing to curriculum design. You will also maintain an active research profile that complements and enhances the School’s existing strengths. You will also engage with university initiatives that promote creativity, diversity, and international perspectives within Film and Media education.
Required Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will possess a film and media studies background (rather than a production or practice-based one) and will have a PhD. They will also be aware of the rapidly evolving media ecology and how audiences are engaging with media and film in diverse ways. Additional knowledge and experience of AI technologies in education is welcome, as will experience of developing or delivering work-related learning into curriculum delivery.
A developing research profile in your specialist area is expected, alongside a commitment to producing outputs of recognised quality. The successful candidate will be collegial, committed to student success, and eager to contribute to a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and academic excellence within the School.
Additional information
We welcome applications from all qualified candidates and particularly encourage applications from people who identify as women or non-binary, as these groups are currently underrepresented in this specialism. Appointments will be made on merit.
