Fixed-Term Part-Time Stipendiary Lectureship in Philosophy

University of Oxford - Wadham College

Location: Oxford
Salary: £22,540 per annum
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 1st June 2026
Closes: 18th June 2026

The College proposes to appoint an 8-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy from September 2026 to August 2027, based at Wadham College. This is a temporary, fixed-term position to fulfil a current teaching need arising from a period of leave being taken by Professor Tom Sinclair.

The lecturer will be required to give on average eight hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term. They are also expected to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The College admits an average of eight undergraduates a year to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and also has students studying Philosophy as part of joint schools with Mathematics, Computer Science and Modern Languages and as part of the undergraduate Classics course.

Key duties include arranging teaching, pastoral care of undergraduate students, setting and marking collections (termly college examinations), attending Tutorial Board meetings, and taking part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.

The post-holder will take responsibility for tutorial and class teaching in the following areas: (i) the Moral Philosophy component of the Preliminary Examinations in Philosophy joint schools; (ii) the Ethics and Theory of Politics Final Honour School Papers together with one or more further FHS papers, especially those popular with Wadham undergraduate philosophers (including but not restricted to Feminist Philosophy, Practical Ethics, and Early Modern Philosophy).

It is expected that the successful candidate will have proven teaching experience relevant to the subject range to be covered. The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of right to work in the UK before the post can be confirmed. Please note that the stipend offered for this post means that the College is not in a position to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa.

The stipend will be on a scale from £22,540 per annum, subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers’ salaries. The position is superannuable under USS. The lecturer will be a member of the College’s Senior Common Room, will have shared use of a room for teaching, and will be entitled to eight meals a week, when the kitchens are open, free of charge. The lecturer will also be entitled to apply to research funds of up to £425 per annum and will receive a small allowance (currently £413) to entertain undergraduates as part of regular pastoral contact.

Applications, consisting of a covering letter (detailing the candidate’s suitability for the post) and a curriculum vitae, should be emailed to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by noon on Thursday 18th June. Applicants should ask two referees to e-mail references directly to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by the same date. It is likely that interviews for this position will be held during the week commencing 6th July.
