Liverpool John Moores University - School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £38,784 to £46,049 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 3rd June 2026
Closes: 22nd June 2026
Job Ref: 5445

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found across every industry and community. We could not exist anywhere else and have helped shape the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is central to why we were founded and why we exist today.

The International Relations & Politics programme area sits within the People, Politics and Communication subject group, part of the School of Humanities and Social Science. We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Following the launch of our MA in International Relations in 2017, we introduced the BA (Hons) International Relations & Politics in 2019. Since then, we have established our excellence. In The Guardian’s most recent league table for International Relations, we finished 7th, and our NSS scores are consistently excellent. We are strategically growing. As part of this, we are launching BA (Hons) Politics, Philosophy and Economics in September 2026. This post offers an opportunity to help shape the new programme and our thriving International Relations & Politics area at LJMU.

We seek a colleague able to teach across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You must have teaching expertise in philosophy or political philosophy. Leadership of the introduction to philosophy module is a core requirement. A second core module combines all three PPE disciplines to examine contemporary issues. Module pro-formas can be sent on request. Experience of teaching material that connects politics, philosophy and economics is desirable.

The People, Politics and Communication subject group brings together International Relations & Politics, Media, Culture & Communication, and Sociology. Colleagues are members of the Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research (CSPR). We would expect you to contribute to CSPR research and develop teaching that attracts students.

The role also involves contributing to teaching at all levels, as needed. Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field and have appropriate undergraduate teaching experience.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and delivering high-quality teaching across the PPE programme and related degrees, particularly the Philosophy-based dimensions.
  • Contributing to programme development and academic leadership.
  • Producing impactful research and/or knowledge exchange.
  • Undertaking administrative roles as directed by the International Relations & Politics area leader, Head of People, Politics & Communication, or Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Matthew Alan Hill, International Relations & Politics Area Lead, at m.a.hill@ljmu.ac.uk.

We offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support, and family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join LJMU as we deliver Strategy 2030: an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, with students at the heart of everything we do.

We look forward to hearing from applicants whose skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU.

LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or belief. Appointments are made on merit.

Please note all vacancies close to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
