This Horizon Europe funded full-time post is available from 1st October 2026 until 30th April 2026, to work with Professor Peter Cox on the EU NextGenCarbon project (https://nextgencarbon-project.eu/).
The starting salary will be from £34,610 to £35,608 on Grade E for the Postdoctoral Research Associate level and from £43,482 to £46,049 on Grade F for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.
The Role
Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy
The Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow to work with Professor Peter Cox in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The successful applicant will be work on the Horizon Europe NextGenCarbon project (https://nextgencarbon-project.eu/), which aims to improve understanding of Europe's greenhouse gas budget using next generation modelling, Earth Observation and Machine Learning. In particular, they will use the JULES-RED forest demography model (https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/13/4067/2020/gmd-13-4067-2020.html) to interpret observed tree size and tree age distributions in terms of tree mortality and tree growth-rate, comparing to the predictions of Demographic Equilibrium Theory (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-44860-7).
About You
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) in climate and/or environmental science. Experience in land-surface modelling and knowledge of the land carbon cycle, will be a distinct advantage. We will consider recruiting to either a Postdoctoral Research Associate role (Grade E) or a Postdoctoral Research Fellow role (Grade F), based on expertise and experience:
Postdoctoral Research Associate: The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow: The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
