The opportunity

University of the Arts London (UAL) is seeking an experienced Lecturer to join the MA Graphic Communication Design team at Central Saint Martins (CSM).

As a Lecturer in MA Graphic Communication Design, you will be responsible for teaching, curriculum design, assessment and on-going scholarship on the course. This course forms part of the Graphic Communication Design Programme within S School at CSM and helps students engage critically with graphic design as both a creative practice and a subject of study. Through iterative and open-ended experimentation with visual media and tools of communication, students develop work that investigates existing knowledge, activates positions and projects new forms of knowledge.

You will help students to develop independent, open-ended and rigorous research-led graphic design practices, with particular attention to form and production. You will support students in contextualising their practice within graphic design and in relation to broader discourses. You will achieve this by broadening the range of perspectives represented within the course through the development of reading lists, course events and other curricular initiatives.

Working closely with the Course Leader, you will help manage resources, materials and working relationships that support course projects and activities. You will also take on the role of tutorial group leader, assuming primary responsibility for a small cohort of students.

About you

The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree and a higher degree, such as an MA, in Graphic Communication Design or a closely related discipline. Previous experience of teaching and assessment within a Higher Education environment (or equivalent experience) is essential.

While a PhD is not required, the University welcomes applications from candidates who can demonstrate rigorous and critical engagement within the field, along with other relevant academic and professional experience.

We are interested in hearing from a range of applicants with a demonstrable commitment to all aspects of graphic communication design practice and education. Shortlisted candidates who are not offered this Lecturer role but are considered suitably qualified will be invited to be added to a pool of Associate Lecturers within the Graphic Communication Design Programme. Candidates added to this pool can then be matched to hourly-paid staffing needs that arise over a 12-month period across all courses in the programme (including undergraduate and postgraduate).
