Cyber Security Specialist

University of Buckingham - IT Services

Location: Buckingham
Salary: £45,294 to £50,011 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 10th June 2026
Closes: 7th July 2026
Job Ref: 392

HOURS: Monday to Friday, 9:00 – 17:00 hrs.

Technology and cyber security play an increasingly important role in supporting teaching, learning, research, student experience, and university operations. We are therefore looking for a Cyber Security Specialist to help strengthen and continually improve the University's cyber security posture, resilience, and assurance activities.

This role offers a unique opportunity to make a visible impact across the institution. Working closely with colleagues throughout the University, you will help shape how we approach cyber security, support key initiatives such as Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, and ensure that security remains aligned with the needs of a modern university environment.

We are looking for somebody who combines strong technical understanding with a practical and collaborative approach to security. You will be comfortable getting hands on with technical controls and improvements whilst also helping colleagues understand cyber risks, make informed decisions, and develop a positive culture around cyber security.

This is not a purely governance, compliance, or policy focused position. We are looking for somebody who understands how systems are really built, supported, and secured in operational environments and who enjoys working collaboratively to improve security in a proportionate and pragmatic way.

The successful candidate will work across a broad range of technologies and projects, helping to identify and reduce risk, improve resilience, support security assurance activities, and contribute to the secure configuration and operation of University systems and services.

We recognise that excellent cyber security professionals come from a variety of technical backgrounds and may not have followed a traditional cyber security career path. Experience gained in hands on IT roles such as infrastructure, networking, systems administration, cloud technologies, technical support, or engineering disciplines can provide an excellent foundation for success in this position.

While governance, risk, and compliance experience can be beneficial, this role is primarily suited to individuals with a strong technical background who understand how technology operates, is administered, secured, and supported in real world environments. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have developed practical operational experience and are looking to apply those skills within a cyber security focused role.

As a smaller university, your work will have visible impact and you will be able to collaborate directly with colleagues across the organisation to help improve services, resilience, and user experience. If you enjoy practical problem solving, working collaboratively, and helping people engage positively with cyber security, we would love to hear from you.

What can we offer you?

In addition to an Aviva Pension scheme, we offer:

  • Beautiful working environments across our campuses
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Christmas closure
  • On-site gym and exercise classes
  • On-site catering facilities
  • University bookshop with staff discount
  • Free on-site parking
  • Discount of courses for staff and their families

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 7th July, and it is anticipated that interviews will be held Friday 24th July

Please note: if successful, any offer is subject to standard checks, including qualifications, eligibility to work in the UK on a permanent basis and DBS (if applicable)
