The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is seeking to appoint a Research Associate. This post is funded by an EPSRC Grant `Sharifi conjecture for Bianchi 3-manifolds’ held by Dr Tobias Berger and is fixed-term for 36 months. The project is developing new tools in the deformation theory of residually reducible Galois representations and studying the cohomology of Bianchi 3-folds using algebraic K-theory in order to prove Sharifi’s conjecture, one of the key open problems in the Langlands programme. Details of the project can be found at http://tberger.staff.shef.ac.uk/.
Working alongside 6 academic staff in algebraic number theory specializing in the Langlands programme will provide you with a stimulating environment to develop a successful research career. Funds will be available for professional development, such as conference participations and research visits.
You should have a PhD in a relevant area of pure mathematics (or equivalent experience). We are looking for someone with a strong background in algebraic number theory or arithmetic algebraic geometry, with expertise to include some of the following: Cohomology of arithmetic groups, algebraic K-theory, and deformations of Galois representations.
