About us

The Department of War Studies is one of the only academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of conflict, security, and international politics through inter-disciplinary teaching, research and engagement. We have a large and diverse faculty, with varied theoretical and methodological expertise in areas including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, contemporary and historical warfare, gender, international relations, migration and borders, security studies, strategic studies, technology and violence.

The Department is located within the School of Security Studies and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. Together, we are committed to embedding good diversity and inclusion practice into all of our activities. We are committed to encourage further growth from diverse groups, and we look forward to welcoming applicants of all abilities and backgrounds, whom we are able to support with our flexible varied working practices. Overall, King’s values the diversity of its staff and student body and recognises that this is both a strength and a defining feature of King’s as a London university in a global context.

About the role

The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Intelligence Studies to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity. We welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching will contribute to and expand our expertise in intelligence studies. We are particularly interested in expanding our expertise in the theory and practice of intelligence analysis and contemporary intelligence culture. Given existing departmental expertise, we are also interested in candidates whose work goes beyond the Cold War and the Anglo-American context. The ability to contribute to the running of large-scale exercises and simulations in the field of intelligence and international security is also desirable.

The successful candidate will have an emerging track record of high-quality publications and a clear research agenda in intelligence studies. They will further maintain research activities and connections through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and will work to secure external research funding.  We offer research mentorship in support of these activities. Upon completion of their probation, the role holder will also be expected to supervise PhD students.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative teaching on compulsory and optional modules at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will contribute to our teaching on intelligence but will also be well equipped to contribute to teaching in the broad areas of security studies, international politics and/or war studies. They will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and will be responsible for contributing to student success.

The successful candidate will also play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of the Department and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.

Further details of key responsibilities and workload allocation are included in the full job description.

This is a full-time role and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

NB: The list of essential and desirable criteria will be used for short-listing, so please provide supporting evidence for each criterion in your application materials.

Appointments can only be made at Lecturer level, Grade 6. It will not be possible to make appointments at more senior grades, or to exceed the salary advertised.
