At the University of York, operational research support is delivered through a single, interconnected institution-wide community of practice through Faculty-facing teams line managed from the Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (RIKE) directorate. The three teams (Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities) provide end-to-end operational support for externally-funded research and research-related projects, throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Pre-Award (working with academics to create budgets, handling internal approvals processes and project management of submission process).
  • Post-Award (accepting awards, setting up budgets and managing finances throughout lifecycle of grant).
  • Environment (supporting strategic thinking around funding, helping academics to engage with new opportunities, and supporting the creation of a strong departmental research environment).

Role
As part of a faculty team, the successful candidate will ensure a responsive service to assist academic staff in the preparation and submission of research and research-related grant applications, in line with university and funder requirements, including:

  • managing a complex portfolio of applications, carrying out accurate Full Economic Costings using University systems, initiating and proactively managing all associated internal processes;
  • providing support and advice on matters escalated by more junior colleagues;
  • working flexibly to provide support and cover for colleagues where required.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications Needed

  • Knowledge of higher education research, including the funding landscape;
  • Knowledge of the areas of engagement, priorities and requirements of key funders;
  • Excellent numeracy skills, competent working with complex project budgets, demonstrating accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Ability effectively to organise and prioritise work and follow procedures, in order to produce work to a high standard to required deadlines;
  • Proactive approach to solving complex problems, including resolving issues escalated from the team;
  • Experience of supporting and mentoring junior staff is desirable.
