The role
The Circular Economy and Waste Manager will lead the delivery and continuous improvement of waste management and circular economy services, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient operations across the University estate. The role implements the University’s waste management strategy and provides specialist operational input to support carbon reduction, resource efficiency and compliance in line with the University Climate Action Plan and Environmental Management System. The postholder manages waste service contracts and budgets, provides specialist advice to stakeholders, and supports Site Services operations, including providing operational cover on waste‑related matters when required.
What will you be doing?
Act as the University’s lead advisor on waste management and circular economy, setting standards and guiding leadership, services and departments. Ensure compliance with all statutory waste requirements (excluding nuclear), including Duty of Care and hazardous waste regulations.
Oversee waste data and reporting for regulatory and sector bodies, and manage waste contracts, including contractor performance and procurement. Control the £1m waste budget, driving financial efficiency.
Maintain the Environmental Management System and support ISO14001 accreditation. Lead circular economy initiatives, including reuse and waste reduction programmes.
Provide expert advice and training on safe, compliant waste handling, and support wider Site Services operations, including deputising for the Operations Manager.

Professional qualifications (or progress toward them), experience in large organisations, and knowledge of ISO14001 or behaviour change initiatives are advantageous. Overall, this role suits someone who combines technical expertise with strategic thinking and a passion for sustainable change.
