Postdoctoral Research Associate in Holobiont Computational Systems Biology

Imperial College London - Department of Bioengineering

Location: London
Salary: £49,017 to £57,582 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 26th June 2026
Closes: 26th July 2026
Job Ref: ENG03958

Location: South Kensington Campus

About the role

Join the Tanaka group at Imperial College London as a Research Associate and be a part of the Centre for Holobiont Research. Holobiont is a term that refers to a larger organism, such as animal, plant or fungus, together with its associated community of microbes and is an underexplored area of research and innovation.

This 3-year Research Associate role is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and will research and develop computational/mathematical frameworks to study multi-scale processes linking molecular mutation to population dynamics.

What you would be doing:

You will apply a mathematical modelling approach (mechanistic ODE models, agent-based models, state-based transition models) to study multi-scale processes linking molecular mutation to population dynamics. We aim to reveal principles governing evolution within holobionts, where selection operates across multiple biological scales and where host states create dynamic fitness landscapes shaping microbial evolutionary trajectories. You will work on this novel project and use state-of-the-art mathematical/computational modelling and machine learning techniques in a collaborative working environment.

What we are looking for:

You will have excellent mathematical skills, programming expertise, and experience in mechanistic modelling of biological systems. A PhD in computational systems biology, applied mathematics, or a closely related discipline, with previous experience in statistical and machine learning methods and knowledge in basic biology. Applicants close to completion of their PhDs will also be considered where experience is directly relevant. You should have excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and enthusiasm for exposure to a diversity of scientific projects. You will work independently and as part of a team. Experience in working with clinical datasets and knowledge of asthma pathophysiology will be advantageous.

What we can offer you:

  • A very supportive and academically stimulating work environment.
  • Being part of a large network of partners across Imperial and at associated institutions who are involved with the Leverhulme Centre for the Holobiont.
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: Gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).

Further Information

The post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The contract is fixed-term full-time for 36 months.

The post is based at South Kensington Campus. We especially welcome applications from underrepresented groups.
