Health & Safety Technician (Radiation Protection)

Salary on appointment will be £26,707 per annum, with an annual increment up to £30,378 per annum. 

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Health and Safety Technician (Radiation Protection) to join University Safety Services.

As part of a central team of health and safety professionals, you will play a key role in safeguarding the wellbeing of our staff, students, and visitors across the University’s diverse estate and activities.

Working collaboratively across a wide range of stakeholders, you will provide professional technical advice and support the continuous improvement of the University’s Health and Safety Management System.

This role has a particular focus on managing specific aspects of radiation safety, radiation laboratories and key responsibilities include:

• Contributing to the development, review, and implementation of health and safety policies, guidance, and procedures in line with legislation, codes of practice, and recognised best practice.
• Undertaking health and safety inspections across Schools and Professional Services, producing clear, evidence-based reports and recommendations for responsible managers.
• Participating in incident investigations as directed, and supporting Schools and Professional Services in identifying, implementing, and monitoring appropriate remedial actions.
• Managing the receipt, control, and record keeping of radioactive materials in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinating the management, storage, and disposal of radioactive waste, including Radiation Decay Store, and Controlled or Supervised Area Laboratories.
• Liaising with internal stakeholders and external contractors to arrange compliant disposal of radioactive waste, including preparation, packaging, and documentation for transfer.

To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree in a scientific discipline, or a minimum of a Level 3 (QCF) qualification in a scientific discipline with demonstrable experience. A basic but recognised Health and Safety qualification, e.g. IOSH Managing Safely, is essential.

This full-time post is available from 1 October 2026 on a fixed term basis for 18 months.
