The School of Applied Sciences at UWE Bristol is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Science Communication. The Science Communication Unit (SCU) is recognised for internationally leading research, creative approaches to practice and outstanding teaching, which seeks to bring science and society closer together. The SCU’s portfolio of activities is extensive, including innovative approaches to engaging diverse publics and over two decades of experience teaching science communication, including via our flagship MSc Science Communication programme.

The successful candidate will design and deliver effective teaching and learning opportunities across our science communication modules and programmes at UWE Bristol and via our continuing professional development (CPD) programmes. The post holder will also be expected to directly contribute to research and knowledge exchange conducted within the SCU.

About you

Candidates will be expected to have or be working towards completion of a PhD in science communication or a subject relevant to the post. We are looking for candidates who have experience of teaching, research and/or practice in science communication. We are particularly looking for candidates with science communication expertise in one or more of these areas:

  • Digital, design-based and/or visual methods for science communication
  • Research on the science-policy interface
  • Social media use in science communication, including topics like mis/disinformation
  • AI, data science and machine learning in science communication

This expertise should be combined with experience in either quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies appropriate to science communication, with preference given to experience in quantitative approaches for this post.

The successful candidate will be supported in this role by an experienced senior lecturer as a mentor. Candidates will be expected to work towards a PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in HE unless already obtained. The successful candidate will be supported to apply for internal funding to develop their research via UWE Bristol’s Research & Investment Framework (RIF).
