About the role

As a Research Fellow in Structural engineering you will be contributing to this project, which will decarbonise the construction industry by combining sensor monitoring data from the innovative, full-scale, 3-storey Earls Court Stone Demonstrator with numerical analyses to produce design guidance and embodied carbon evaluations for structures based on natural stone as low-carbon, load-bearing construction materials, via a team comprising structural, dynamics and geomatic engineers at UCL collaborating with Future Observatory at the Design Museum, WebbYates Engineers and the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich.

Main duties of the role include:

  • Hold weekly meetings with the project lead to discuss progress and next steps.
  • Liaise with and secure timely inputs from the project partners Future Observatory, the site activity coordinator, WebbYates and the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich.
  • Develop and run FE models of natural stone structures at the material, component and overall structural assembly levels, with validation using field monitoring data for the innovative Earls Court Stone Demonstrator as obtained from a monitoring specialist project partner.
  • Conduct parametric analyses using the verified FE to develop design office-friendly modelling approaches for such stone structures at serviceability and ultimate.
  • Combine understanding from the field tests, previous lab tests and the predictive modelling into design guidance for stone structures including criteria for use within the circular economy

This role is an fixed-term contract, with the earliest start date of 3rd August 2026 and a current funding end date of 31st December 2027.

About you

To be successful as a Research Fellow in Structural Engineering, you will need:

  • PhD, or MSc with a strong expectation of a PhD shortly, in low-carbon Structural Engineering.
  • Working experience and knowledge of nonlinear numerical modelling linked to advanced lab and / or field load testing, preferably on the topic of structural stone.
  • Experience of fabrication of structural components in natural stone.
  • Publications in Q1 journals on the above topics.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to support organisation of scientific & dissemination multi-disciplinary events.
  • Ability to translate tasks agreed during meetings with supervisor into useful output.
