About us

An HPC Engineer position is available within the Data Science and Data Management Team at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute. The Institute is a world-leading cancer research institute situated in the vibrant city of Glasgow. It provides a dynamic, supportive and well-resourced environment for basic and translational scientists, with a mission to understand the mechanisms that regulate cancer cell proliferation, survival and dissemination, identify critical components of these pathways as targets for novel cancer therapies, and help translate this knowledge to patient benefit.

About the Role

The Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute is expanding its data science, data management and high-performance computing capabilities to support a broad portfolio of research across the Institute.

This HPC Engineer role will help ensure that the Institute’s computing environment is reliable, secure and able to support the rapidly growing volume and complexity of research data generated across laboratories.

The post holder will support the operation and development of the Institute’s Linux-based compute infrastructure, including CPU and GPU clusters, storage systems, data centre hardware, networking interfaces, software environments and research data workflows. A key part of the role will be to work closely with researchers, software engineers, data scientists, bioinformaticians and laboratory staff to ensure that computational systems meet the practical needs of experimental cancer research.

The role will also support the development of data streaming, preprocessing and automated data movement from laboratory instruments and research platforms into managed storage, analysis pipelines and downstream data platforms. This will include helping to design robust workflows for high-throughput data, imaging, sequencing, omics, preclinical modelling and other experimental outputs.

About the team

The team works across research groups and technology platforms to make data integration, collaboration, analysis and sharing simpler, more robust and more widely accessible. Current work includes a CRUK data platform, automated workflows, high-performance computing and support for major cancer research programmes.
