Applications are invited for a part-time Fly Laboratory Technician position in the Fly Facility at the Department of Genetics (www.flyfacility.gen.cam.ac.uk). The facility provides support for Drosophila (fruit fly) research and teaching both in Cambridge and beyond. The Fly Laboratory Technician will play an important role in the delivery of the facility's services and in the general operation of the facility.
The Fly Laboratory Technician's primary responsibility will be to maintain fly stocks as part of the facility's stock-keeping service. In addition, they will contribute to the daily running of the facility and provide support during staff absence, or periods of increased demand for the facility's services. This work may involve assisting with the facility's fly food service, proving support for its microinjection service, or preparing materials for Drosophila teaching.
The successful candidate should be educated to GCSE level grade A-C /NVQ level 2 or equivalent in a science subject/ equivalent level of practical experience. They should also have experience in an academic or commercial laboratory; basic IT skills, good communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and as well as having a methodical approach to problem solving. Previous experience of working with Drosophila is desirable, but not essential, as training will be provided.
The position is offered on a part-time basis of 18.25 hours per week (0.5FTE) Monday to Friday and is fixed term for an initial period of 12 months in the first instance.
