University of Aberdeen - School of Biological Sciences

Location: Aberdeen
Salary: £38,784 to £46,049 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th July 2026

Type of Contract: Funding limited until 31 July 2028

This Research Fellow position offers a unique opportunity for a talented ecologist with strong statistical skills to make a leading contribution to an ongoing interdisciplinary project that aims to develop more effective and sustainable rodent control strategies for rural settings in Africa.

Rodents have significant impacts on human health and well-being through the consumption of crops and stored food, and the transmission of disease. The project focuses on Madagascar, working with local research organisations and stakeholders, and conducting empirical field studies to improve our understanding of rodent ecology, disease epidemiology (plague, leptospirosis) and the impact of potential management strategies. This post will analyse archived data and supporting ongoing empirical studies, using advanced statistical approaches to explore aspects such as relationships between rodent density and rates of reproduction and infection, and spatial variation in the effectiveness of control. Depending on the interests and skills of the successful candidate there is also the potential for contributing to the development of spatially-realistic population models to explore the impact of different control strategies. This position will work closely with partner institutes and field teams and contribute to training of team members in Madagascar. The successful candidate will be required to make a leading contribution to the writing and submission of research publications.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in ecology or epidemiology, with a thorough knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area. They should have a depth of relevant research experience, including proven ability in the application of advanced statistical analyses to large datasets and publication of quality research articles.  The successful candidate will also have experience of field studies, preferably in Africa.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic interdisciplinary collaboration, and the position will work closely with the wider team, including other PDRAs focussing on molecular epidemiological studies and social-science and stakeholder engagement.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 6,  £38,784.00 - £46,049.00 per annum with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Sandra Telfer, Principal Investigator, e-mail:  s.telfer@abdn.ac.uk
