Post-Doctoral Research Associate: Defect engineering in lithium- and sodium-ion battery cathode materials (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £33,002 to £46,049 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th July 2026
Closes: 11th August 2026
Job Ref: MA50293

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the group of Prof. Dame Clare P. Grey in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, working on a project focused on defect engineering in lithium- and sodium-ion battery cathode materials.

The successful candidate will design and synthesise cathode materials using methods to control for the type and concentration of defects. They will investigate the influence of defects on the electrochemical performance of the cathode materials; therefore, experience with battery assembly and electrochemical measurements (galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) is essential.

The successful candidate will use advanced characterisation techniques and in situ methodologies to study the new materials. Experience with X-ray and neutron diffraction, and X-ray and muon spectroscopy is essential. Familiarity with designing and implementing in situ/operando experimental setups is essential. Experience with additional characterisation techniques - e.g. solid-state NMR, on-line electrochemical mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, or electron microscopy - is desirable. The project will involve collaboration with other researchers both internationally and within UK-wide consortia, and so a demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team is essential.

Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or a closely related discipline. A strong proven track record of publication in relevant fields is essential. Excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to work independently are also key requirements for this position.
