Lecturer in Environmental History (Teaching & Scholarship) (0.5 FTE)- Grade 7

Hours of work: Part-time/0.5 FTE

Tenure: Fixed term from 14 September 2026 to 18 June 2027

Hybrid Working: 2 days/week on Campus or minimum requirement of 40% on Campus, with 60% considered desirable where possible

The Department of History is seeking to appoint an individual to a fixed-term post in Environmental History to provide teaching cover for Investigators on the Wellcome Trust Discovery Award ‘Melting Metropolis: Everyday Histories of Heat and Health in London, New York and Paris since 1945’.

We are an interdisciplinary group of historians committed to an engaged approach to teaching and researching the global past. We place particular emphasis on addressing historical injustices through our work on the Holocaust, gender, medical racism, slavery, and colonial and postcolonial violence. From climate change to health care, library provision, abortion, religious intolerance, and the rise of the far right, we pride ourselves on using historical research to inform key contemporary debates.

The Department of History is part of the School of Histories, Languages & Cultures, which explores culture and society from the origins of humanity and ancient history to modern day politics and includes the Departments of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology; History; Irish Studies; Language, Cultures and Film; and Politics. It is one of four Schools within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Key responsibilities and duties:

• Responsibility for convening and delivering the third-year special subject module HIST332: ‘Confronting Catastrophe? Environmental Histories of Britain, Europe and the United States since 1800’ (Semester 1), for which previous module materials will be available should the successful candidate wish to use them.
• Responsibility for acting in Semester 2 as Dissertation Supervisor for students taking HIST332.
• Contribute to team teaching on HIST104: The Global History of the Present (Semester 1)
• Contribute to team teaching on HIST116: People, Power and Politics: Approaches to Modern British History, c.1880-2016.
• Contributing to the moderation of History modules as required.
• Acting as academic advisor to Undergraduate students.
