Research Assistant/Associate in Meta-Material Fabrication (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering, West Cambridge

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £33,002 to £46,049 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 9th July 2026
Closes: 24th July 2026
Job Ref: NM50320

Applications are invited for an experimental researcher post available for 24 months. The researcher will be part of the NanoManufacturing group, which looks at various aspects of nanotechnology and manufacturing processes as well as energy storage. This is a diverse team that values collaboration, scientific excellence and research integrity.

The primary role of the researcher is to develop new scalable processes for manufacturing large area meta-materials. In particular, we will focus on roll-to-roll (R2R) processing methods, which we seek to combine with emerging bottom self-assembly processes and top-down imprint lithography. The candidate will be based in the Department of engineering working in Prof Michael De Volder's group (http://www.nanomanufacturing.eng.cam.ac.uk/), and will collaborate closely with Prof Jeremy Baumberg's NanoPhotonics Centre in the Physics department  (http://www.np.phy.cam.ac.uk/), as well as the wider EPSRC MetaHub community (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/metamaterials/keyprojects/metahub/). The selected candidate will play a key role in the development of new R2R processes and apply these to new 3D nanoscale metamaterials developed by the MetaHub consortium. Collaborating with these groups will create a stimulating work environment with exciting opportunities for personal development and learning about different fields of research.

We will consider candidates with various research backgrounds including Physics, Engineering, Physical Chemistry, and Material Science. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in in roll-to-roll processing, colloidal self-assembly, lithography and/or microfluidics.

Applicants are required to have a PhD or be close to obtaining a PhD.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
