About the role

The Faculty of Media, Science & Technology is seeking an exceptional and inspiring academic leader to become Head of School for The Media School, one of the UK's most respected centres for media education and innovation.

The Media School brings together expertise across Corporate and Marketing Communication, Journalism, Film & TV, Media, and Music Production, creating a dynamic environment where creativity, research and industry collaboration thrive. Students benefit from access to outstanding facilities, including a 200m² soundstage studio, green screen studio, screening rooms, SSL recording studios, specialist software and multi-channel audio spaces.

As Head of School, you will build on the School’s excellent reputation and play a pivotal role in delivering the ambitions of the University's BU2035 Strategy. Reporting to the PVC Dean of the Faculty and supported by four Associate Heads of School, you will provide visionary academic leadership and strategic direction, ensuring excellence across education, research, innovation, employability and industry engagement. 

You will:

  • Lead the development and delivery of the School’s vision and strategy, aligned to University and Faculty priorities.
  • Provide strong academic, operational and financial leadership, managing people, resources and performance.
  • Drive excellence in learning, teaching, student experience and graduate outcomes.
  • Enhance research quality, outputs, impact and income generation.
  • Strengthen and expand partnerships with industry, professional bodies and external stakeholders.
  • Foster innovation through technology-enhanced learning and future-focused curriculum development.
  • Lead educational and employability initiatives that create experiential, immersive and student-centred learning opportunities.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, talent development, succession planning and high performance.

As a member of the University Leadership Team, you will help shape the future direction of the Faculty and University while contributing to education, research and professional practice activity.

About You

You will hold a Doctorate (or equivalent professional standing) in a relevant discipline and demonstrate:

  • Significant academic leadership experience.
  • A strong track record of research leadership and achievement.
  • Established industry networks and external engagement.
  • Strategic vision and the ability to lead organisational change.
  • A commitment to academic excellence, innovation and student success.
  • Outstanding people leadership skills, with a focus on developing high-performing teams.
