Introduction to the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team delivering the new international Joint Education Programme (JEP) in Biomedical Science between the University of Birmingham (UoB) and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China.

UoB has over 10 years’ experience delivering educational programmes in China starting with Mathematics at Jinan University which was established in 2011. UoB is building upon this success and we have established a JEP in Biomedical Science at HUST which is in Hubei province in Central China. In 2026 we will welcome our 2nd cohort of students onto the JEP who have been recruited from all over China.

Requirements for the position

The individual will be based full-time at HUST, China and we are seeking to appoint a highly regarded Assistant Professor in Biomedical Sciences (grade 8) to join our team in China. The individual will take significant responsibility for the teaching and learning on the BSc Biomedical Sciences degree part of the JEP.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD and extensive teaching and leadership experience at undergraduate level, in any relevant biomedical subject.

Brief Person Specification

  • A PhD or equivalent in a Biomedical discipline.
  • Demonstrable excellence in delivering Biomedical education, management and administration.
  • Ability to be based in China.
  • Previous experience of Transnational Education (TNE) or working outside of the UK would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
  • Experience of module design, assessment and leadership, and expertise in delivering teaching across a range of biomedical subjects.
  • Experience of working in a programme management team would be an advantage.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others.

Salary & Benefits

  • Assistant Professor at - £47,389 – £56,535 (UK Grade 8) per annum
  • Converted rate of RMB 430,161 - 513,182 per annum
  • Apartment provided by HUST
  • Pension (USS UK) contribution

  • UoB/HUST will sponsor the working visa and residence permit for staff
  • Paid holidays including annual leave and sickness leave

The successful candidate will ideally be in post by late 2026 to allow for induction into the role ready to begin teaching delivery.
