The University of Leeds is one of the top 80 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe.

Our Student Education and Experience directorates are a family of student-related services that focus on delivering an exceptional student experience. Teamwork is key to our success, and we are committed to supporting every student to make the most of their time at Leeds and go on to succeed in their chosen career and make a positive difference in the world. As part of the Student Experience and Support Directorate, you will work with our other Muslim Student Adviser, Student Experience and Support teams, Leeds University Union, Chaplains and other colleagues to support an excellent experience for our Muslim students and contribute to promoting equality and diversity and an inclusive environment for all at the University. You will report to the Head of International Student Office, with responsibility to the University’s Director of Student Experience and Support.

You will have significant experience of providing pastoral support, including supporting people with mental health difficulties and people in emotional distress. You will also have the skills and ability to nurture understanding of the Muslim faith and provide spiritual support to enable students to thrive during their time at university. As well as being a great listener who enjoys working with people, you will have a profound respect for diversity and be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and empathy towards, the variety of needs and beliefs of a large and diverse community going through the highs and lows of their student journey. An in-depth understanding of Islam in its diverse forms is essential.

You will need to have worked in a similar role within a community or, preferably, university environment. Some evening and occasional weekend work will be required to attend meetings and events, along with working adjusted hours where needed to facilitate appointments with students who are on placement during standard office hours.
