The Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) at UCL is one of the world’s leading centres for research and education in civil, environmental and geomatic engineering for sustainable and resilient societies. Bringing together expertise across civil engineering, environmental systems, structures, geotechnics, geomatics, infrastructure, construction and digital engineering, the Department addresses global challenges associated with climate change, natural and man-made hazards, urbanisation, infrastructure systems, resource constraints and societal resilience.

About the role

CEGE is home to world-class Environmental Engineering research. Our interdisciplinary research develops sustainable, science-based solutions to pressing environmental and development challenges. By integrating engineering, environmental science, policy, data analytics, and international development, we create practical, scalable approaches that support resilient communities and sustainable infrastructure worldwide.

We are seeking an accomplished and internationally recognised academic leader in sustainability and environmental engineering with extensive experience in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing sustainable engineering solutions through innovative research, high-quality education, and impactful collaboration with industry, government, and the wider community.

As a Professor of Sustainability and Environmental Engineering, you will:

  • Lead and develop internationally recognised research in an area of sustainability and environmental engineering that synergises with existing departmental and UCL activities and with potential for growth and international influence
  • Initiate and lead major interdisciplinary programmes addressing global sustainability challenges and identify and develop emerging research opportunities that enhance CEGE’s international position
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with leading universities, industry, government and international organisations
  • Make a significant and sustained contribution to the strategic direction and long-term development of CEGE, the Faculty and UCL

About you

As a Professor of Sustainability and Environmental Engineering, you will hold a PhD in a relevant subject area and be internationally recognised for your expertise and significant contributions to sustainability and environmental engineering. You will demonstrate an outstanding research profile, evidenced by a strong portfolio of high-quality publications, successful research projects, and a sustained record of scholarly achievement with international impact. You will have a proven track record of securing significant external research funding from sources such as government bodies, industry partners, and research councils. Evidence of academic leadership through contributions to programme development, curriculum innovation, and departmental or institutional management is essential. In addition, you will bring substantial experience in leading strategic engagement initiatives that have generated meaningful research impact and influence across industry, government, non-governmental organisations, and international research communities. You will possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder-engagement skills, with a demonstrated ability to build consensus, influence decision-making, and develop productive partnerships internally and externally.
