About the role:

As part of one of the world's leading engineering departments at Imperial, the Department of Mechanical Engineering delivers a four-year undergraduate MEng programme to around 600 students and a one-year Master's programme in Advanced Mechanical Engineering.

We are seeking an exceptional engineer who is passionate about leading student-focused initiatives, to join our team as a Senior Teaching Fellow to lead initiatives relating to Student Experience. This role sits at the heart of our undergraduate student journey to enhance engagement, success, wellbeing and belonging across our taught programmes.

Working closely with students, academic colleagues and professional services staff, you will identify and address educational and pastoral challenges, develop innovative solutions, and drive continuous improvement across our programmes. This will also include leading the inclusion of Widening Participation schemes to ensure that every student has an equal opportunity to become a top Engineer graduate. Overall, you will play a key role in shaping an inclusive and supportive learning environment, acting as a champion for student wellbeing and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

The Senior Teaching Fellow will actively engage in Mechanical Design teaching and tutoring. This topic is a fundamental aspect of modern Mechanical Engineering, and preparing our graduates in this field is essential for their long term success. As part of core and optional modules, your delivery of design teaching activities will contribute towards our overall mission to graduate the top students in UK and Internationally.

As a member of the Teaching Executive Committee, you will contribute to strategic decision-making on student and education matters, while supporting Imperial's wider educational mission. Alongside your teaching responsibilities, you will provide leadership for programme delivery and development, working with other Teaching Fellows and academic staff to ensure an outstanding educational experience for our students.

What you would be doing:

  • You will lead ideas and initiatives relating to improving the student experience.
  • You will be a key member of the teaching team for Mechanical Design. This will entail developing and delivering lectures, seminars and tutorials across the undergraduate cohort.
  • You will line manage the Student Wellbeing Advisor, who acts as a confidential counselling support service to our undergraduate cohort.

What we are looking for:

  • You have a demonstrable commitment to teaching and education
  • You have experience working with students to understand their pastoral needs and developed initiatives to support their studentship journey positively.
  • You have appropriate contextual knowledge of engineering design to undertake a teaching role in that subject matter, in a University Mechanical Engineering department.
  • You have experience in teaching, along with the associated administration and management.
  • You will be educated to a degree level in a subject relevant to Engineering. A higher-level degree would be advantageous.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to use science for humanity by sharing your passion and inspiring the next generation.
  • Gain access to Imperial's top-tier Educational Development Unit, which offers a wide range of tailored educational development services to meet your needs.
  • Join a diverse and innovative learning and teaching community at an institution that values research-led educational provision.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
