The Department of Bioengineering is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of research and innovation. We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Biosciences Core Facilities Manager to join our technical team and play a key role in supporting world-leading research, teaching, and innovation.

Working as part of a collaborative technical team, you will provide specialist support and leadership across a range of departmental core facilities and research laboratories. Based primarily at our White city campus, you will work closely with colleagues across the department and wider College community, providing expertise, operational support, and continuous improvement across our facilities.

What you would be doing:

Reporting directly to the Technical Operations Manager (Biosciences), you will take a lead role in the management and development of key technical areas including:

  • Cell and tissue culture facilities
  • Microscopy and fluorescence imaging
  • Bionanocharacterisation

You will ensure these facilities operate effectively, safely, and to the highest standards, enabling researchers, students, and collaborators to achieve their scientific goals.

You will:

  • Lead the day-to-day operation and development of multi-user laboratory core facilities, ensuring excellent service delivery, accessibility, and user support.
  • Provide specialist technical advice, troubleshooting, training, and competency assessment for staff, students, researchers, and external users.
  • Manage equipment, infrastructure, maintenance, calibration, stock control, waste processes, and access arrangements to ensure facilities remain compliant and fit for purpose.
  • Support undergraduate teaching activities through technical expertise, practical preparation, and laboratory delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with academic, research, technical, estates, and safety teams to maintain and improve departmental laboratory services.
  • Line manage and mentor technical staff and laboratory apprentices, supporting their development, training, and professional progression.

What we are looking for:

You will have substantial experience working in a laboratory environment, with strong practical knowledge of relevant biological techniques and laboratory operations. You will be confident supporting a diverse range of users and have the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy research environment.

You will specifically looking for:

  • Experience managing or supporting shared laboratory facilities or technical services.
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practice, aseptic technique, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Experience with specialist biological research equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with researchers, students, contractors, and technical colleagues.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or developing technical staff.
  • A proactive approach to improving processes, services, and user experience.

Further Information

This is a fulltime, permanent role which is 100% on-site to support our laboratories. Flexibility will be required to meet the demands of our different research facilities and teaching laboratories.

There will be an element of manual handling involved such as stock replenishment and accepting and transporting deliveries.

While primarily based at White City, you will also have the chance to collaborate with colleagues and access, be trained and assist in the support of specialist facilities at our South Kensington Campus.

If you are excited by this opportunity and want to be part of a dynamic and supportive team helping students to thrive, we’d love to hear from you.
