We are seeking a talented and motivated researcher with expertise in X-ray and synchrotron imaging to contribute to cutting-edge research exploring the structure and function of complex environmental systems.
About the Role
This Research Fellow post is part of a major externally funded soil science programme, supporting a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. You will lead the synchrotron and X-ray imaging elements of the project, investigating how pore-scale structure and mineral-carbon interactions influence the storage and movement of organic carbon across the soil–bedrock continuum.
The role includes significant periods working at Diamond Light Source, designing and delivering experiments using X-ray micro-computed tomography and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES). You will also undertake laboratory imaging, develop analytical workflows, and process and interpret complex 2D and 3D datasets.
Working within an interdisciplinary team, you will contribute to research on weathering processes, pore network development and carbon distribution during early soil formation. You will integrate imaging outputs with biological and biogeochemical datasets and disseminate findings through high-quality publications and presentations.
About You
You will hold a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, Geoscience, Environmental Science or a related discipline, with expertise in laboratory-based or synchrotron CT imaging.
You should have experience of designing imaging experiments, analysing complex datasets and interpreting imaging outputs. Experience of working at large-scale research facilities, such as synchrotrons, is desirable.
You will have excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills, be able to work independently and collaboratively, and manage competing priorities effectively. A willingness to spend periods working at Diamond Light Source and travel as required is essential.
