Teaching Fellow in Architecture

Are you an ARB-registered architect working in contemporary professional practice and passionate about helping prepare the next generation of architects?

About the role

The University of Plymouth is seeking to appoint up to three Teaching Fellows in Architecture (0.2FTE / 7.4 hours per week) to contribute practitioner-informed teaching across our Architecture programmes.

We are looking for architects from commercially active and forward-thinking practices who can bring current industry knowledge, professional expertise and contemporary perspectives directly into the curriculum. We are particularly interested in practitioners working at the forefront of technical delivery, professional practice, existing building adaptation, sustainability and emerging modes of architectural production.

You will contribute to design studio teaching, workshops, reviews, technical and professional education, assessment and student development. Through your engagement with students, as a Teaching Fellow, you will help bridge the gap between architectural education and contemporary professional practice, ensuring graduates are equipped to respond confidently to the challenges of the built environment sector.

These appointments form part of a strategic investment in professional practice education and support the School's commitment to delivering professionally relevant, design-led and ARB-aligned architectural education. You will:

• Contribute to teaching, design studio tutoring, reviews and assessment across Architecture programmes.
• Share contemporary professional knowledge through tutorials, seminars, workshops and project-based learning.
• Help students understand how architectural projects are developed, coordinated and delivered in practice.
• Bring current industry challenges, opportunities and emerging approaches into the curriculum.
• Work collaboratively with academic colleagues to strengthen the professional relevance of teaching and learning.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking practitioners who can demonstrate:

• Registration as an Architect with the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
• Significant experience within a commercially active and forward-thinking architectural practice.
• Current knowledge of contemporary professional standards, regulations, procurement routes and project delivery processes.
• The ability to communicate professional knowledge effectively through teaching, mentoring and student engagement.
• A commitment to inclusive, student-centred architectural education.
• We are particularly interested in practitioners whose expertise strengthens one or more of the following areas of the curriculum:
• Technical design, construction systems, detailing, building performance and the integration of architectural design with construction delivery and complex safety scenarios
• Progressive approaches to professional practice, project delivery, procurement, project coordination and regulatory compliance.
• Contemporary approaches to the treatment of existing buildings, including retrofit, conservation, adaptive reuse and sustainability-led transformation.
• Digital delivery, BIM, design management and emerging technologies influencing architectural practice.
