Post Doctoral Research Fellow - Mapping Futures 2 Project

The Role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join Mapping Futures 2: Reframing Environmental Science Pathways in Further Education, a NERC-funded project exploring how environmental science pathways are understood and experienced by young adults in Further Education. The project examines the conditions that can make environmental science feel more accessible and relevant as a future study or career pathway, with particular attention to how learning environments and communication practices are shaped by neurodivergence. It brings together participatory engagement, creative workshops and residential fieldwork to develop practical insights and resources for more inclusive environmental science progression routes. 

The postholder will support the day-to-day delivery of the research, including scoping reviews, ethics and data governance processes, qualitative and mixed-methods data collection, analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and preparation of project outputs. A key part of the role will be supporting young adult participants, ensuring that their experiences inform the project’s outputs.

The Person

We are looking for a researcher with a PhD or equivalent strong research experience in a field relevant to education, inclusive pedagogy, youth engagement, neurodiversity research, or a related area. You will have experience of qualitative and/or mixed-methods research and evaluation, and be confident working collaboratively with young people, education providers and community partners. You will be able to support co-designed and participatory research, coordinate project activity and communicate clearly with a range of audiences. Experience of intersectionality, neurodivergence, environmental education, creative or arts-based methods or field-based learning would be an advantage. You will bring strong organisational skills, safeguarding awareness, and the ability to translate research findings into practical outputs for education, policy and wider audiences.

The Faculty

The role sits within Kingston University’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, contributing to research and knowledge exchange that addresses environmental challenges, inclusive education and future skills. The postholder will be part of an interdisciplinary project team working across environmental science, education, creative practice and inclusion. Through this work, the project will generate evidence and practical resources that support more inclusive routes into environmental science.

Further information

This is a full time, fixed term position for 24 months with a starting salary of £45,025 per annum.
