An exciting opportunity exists to join the University of Western Australia’s highly successful Biomedical Engineering@Perkins initiative and contribute to translating engineering innovation into meaningful healthcare outcomes. This position offers the chance to establish and lead a globally recognised research program in cardiovascular biomechanics, working at the interface of engineering, medicine and clinical practice. The successful appointee will benefit from generous research start-up funding for up to three years, including support for a fully funded PhD scholarship, providing an outstanding platform to build a thriving research portfolio from the outset.

About the School and Research Environment

The School of Engineering at the University of Western Australia (UWA) is internationally recognised for research excellence, innovative teaching and world-class facilities. As one of Australia’s leading engineering schools, it brings together expertise across biomedical, mechanical, civil, environmental, mining, software, electrical and electronic, automation and robotics, and chemical engineering disciplines.

This role forms part of Biomedical Engineering@Perkins, a unique and highly collaborative initiative that embeds biomedical engineers alongside clinicians and medical researchers to accelerate the development of innovative healthcare solutions. The successful candidate will be co-located within both the School of Engineering and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, one of Western Australia’s premier medical research institutes. Home to more than 250 researchers, the Perkins Institute focuses on addressing major health challenges including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, genetic conditions and other significant diseases through collaborative and translational research.

About the Opportunity

As a Senior Lecturer (Biomedical Engineering), you will lead a high-impact research program in cardiovascular biomechanics and translational biomedical engineering, aligned with the Harry Perkins Institute. The role involves building national and international research collaborations, securing competitive funding, publishing high-quality research, and supervising HDR, postgraduate and undergraduate students.

You will also contribute to teaching excellence across Biomedical Engineering programs, particularly in biomechanics, while supporting curriculum development, student placements, industry engagement and clinical partnerships. In addition, you will play an active role in the leadership, governance and strategic development of the School and its research initiatives.

About You

You will hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Cardiovascular Biomechanics or a closely related discipline. You will have a strong track record of research excellence demonstrated through high-quality publications, competitive grant success and evidence of research impact. Expertise in cardiovascular biomechanics and research aligned with translational health and cardiovascular science is essential.
