About the role

The University of Bath is seeking a proactive and collaborative Health & Safety Manager to join our Core Research Facilities (CRF) team. Our Core Research Facilities provide world-class research and teaching infrastructure that supports hundreds of researchers, students and external partners across a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines. This role is central to ensuring that our laboratories and specialist facilities remain safe, compliant and accessible environments where cutting-edge research can thrive. 

In this role you will:

  • Lead and champion a positive safety culture across our Core Research Facilities, driving continuous improvement and ensuring compliance with University and UK health and safety requirements. 
  • Work closely with researchers, technical specialists, academics and students to provide expert advice on risk assessment, safe systems of work, incident management and laboratory safety. 
  • Coordinate health and safety governance and compliance activities, including inspections, audits, committee meetings, training programmes and statutory requirements. 
  • Play a key role in supporting world-leading research, helping to create safe environments for work involving specialist equipment, hazardous chemicals, compressed gases, cryogens and other complex research activities. 

About the Core Research Facilities

The Core Research Facilities bring together specialist laboratories, equipment and technical expertise that support research and teaching activities across multiple faculties at the University of Bath. The facilities enable innovative research in areas spanning engineering, physical sciences, chemical sciences and interdisciplinary research.

As our Health & Safety Manager, you will work at the heart of this environment, collaborating with Facility Leads, technical teams, researchers, Campus Infrastructure colleagues and the University's Safety, Health, Environment and Wellbeing (SHEW) team to ensure our facilities operate to the highest standards of safety and compliance.

What you'll be doing

You will be the focal point for health and safety matters across the Core Research Facilities, with responsibilities including:

Delivering and coordinating health and safety training and inductions.

Supporting the development and review of risk assessments and standard operating procedures.

Leading safety inspections and ensuring actions are implemented and tracked to completion.

Investigating incidents and near misses, identifying lessons learned and driving improvements.

Supporting compliance programmes, audits and contractor management.

Working with stakeholders across faculties to develop consistent and effective safety practices. 

About you

We're looking for a confident and engaging health and safety professional who can build relationships, influence good practice and provide practical solutions within a complex technical environment.

You will have:

A relevant degree, equivalent experience, or substantial experience in a related field.

A recognised health and safety qualification.

Experience promoting and implementing health and safety policies, procedures and compliance activities.

Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of audiences

Experience working within laboratory, scientific, technical or engineering environments.
