Lecturer in Palliative Care (Academic Education Pathway) 

About the role

The post holder will primarily contribute to postgraduate taught education at the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation, providing teaching backfill during Dr Sabrina Bajwah’s five-year NIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship. The post holder will co-lead the Advanced Symptom Control module on the MSc Palliative Care, with Dr Bajwah as senior lead, and lead/co-lead the Symptoms and Psychosocial Concerns module on the MSc Health and Care Strategies for Ageing Populations.

The role involves delivering teaching across modules including Advanced Symptom Control, Research Methods and Statistics, and Service Development and Policy; marking; personal tutoring; MSc dissertation supervision; and the annual refresh, forum moderation and delivery of distance-learning content. The post holder will also co-supervise MBBS scholarly projects aligned to the EQUICARE research programme and join postgraduate research supervision teams as a day-to-day supervisor. This role is instrumental in preparing the next generation of palliative care and health equity leaders, thereby contributing to distinctive education and world-leading research that improves health and care.

The successful applicant will be responsible to Dr Sabrina Bajwah, Clinical Reader in Palliative Medicine, and will work collaboratively with the programme leads for the MSc Palliative Care and MSc Health and Care Strategies for Ageing Populations and the faculty professional services teams.

The role is a part time role (14 hours per week) and you will be offered a five-year fixed-term contract aligned to the fellowship (to 31 August 2031). The faculty will also consider secondments into the role.

Location: Hybrid – minimum of one day per week (Wednesday) on site at the Cicely Saunders Institute, King’s College Hospital campus, Denmark Hill

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

• Registration with a healthcare discipline, such as nursing, midwifery, medicine, pharmacy, and the allied health care professions (including healthcare scientists) in the UK or international equivalent
• Experience of planning and delivering high-quality evaluated education at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, with a strong focus on a high-quality inclusive student experience and success
• Specialist knowledge and clinical and/or academic experience in palliative care and symptom management, sufficient to co-lead and deliver postgraduate teaching in advanced symptom control
• Sound knowledge of research design and methodology, including systematic review methods and qualitative and quantitative synthesis, with the ability to teach research methods and supervise postgraduate dissertations
• Ability to work well as an effective and inclusive member of teams and networks, to share and encourage good practice in teaching and research, and to inspire and motivate others
• Excellent administrative, organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to deliver high-quality work to deadlines and take individual responsibility for planning and undertaking work
• Publications, conference presentations and/or applicant on funding to support educational enhancement, service improvement, research and/or scholarship

Desirable criteria

• PhD or equivalent relevant to themes of the Faculty and this role
• Experience of innovative and effective approaches to teaching, including distance learning, blended learning, digital learning and/or simulation, with appropriate training completed
• Experience of co-leading/leading research projects, education activities or clinical service
• Experience of course development, with creative approaches to assessment, providing robust, developmental and constructive feedback at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
• Proven commitment to innovation and student learning in education, to support student welfare, and enabling students’ personal and professional development, and providing academic advice and pastoral support
