About the Role
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a Barts Charity-funded project investigating early-onset type 2 diabetes and mid-life frailty in British Bangladeshi and British Pakistani communities in East London.
The postholder will analyse longitudinal data from the Genes & Health study, including linked NHS electronic health records and genomic data. They will prepare analysis-ready datasets, derive and validate frailty measures, undertake longitudinal and trajectory-based statistical analyses, and examine associations with hospitalisation, falls, cardiovascular events and mortality.
The role will also contribute to peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, patient and public involvement activities, project reporting and the development of reproducible analytical pipelines.
About You
You will have a PhD, or be close to completion, in epidemiology, health data science, statistics, bioinformatics or a closely related quantitative discipline.
You will have strong practical experience of managing and analysing large-scale longitudinal health data using R, together with knowledge of epidemiological research methods and reproducible analytical practice. You should be able to work independently, manage competing priorities and communicate findings clearly to academic, clinical and non-specialist audiences.
Experience of linked NHS electronic health records, secure research environments, longitudinal modelling, frailty, diabetes, genomic data or polygenic risk scores would be advantageous.
About the School/Department/Institute/Project
The post will be based in the Centre for Primary Care within the Wolfson Institute of Population Health at Queen Mary University of London.
The multidisciplinary project brings together expertise in epidemiology, diabetes, healthy ageing, genomics and population health. Using the Genes & Health cohort, it will investigate whether younger onset type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased burden and faster progression of frailty in mid-life.
The project addresses an important health inequality affecting East London’s South Asian communities and will generate new methods and preliminary evidence to support future research, earlier risk identification and improved service planning.
