Head of Contextual Practice (School of Musical Theatre & Dance)

Italia Conti

Location: Woking
Salary: £38,000 to £42,000
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 11th August 2026
Closes: 31st August 2026

Are you an accomplished Contextual Practice tutor with experience at FE or HE level with a background in Dance & Musical Theatre and a flair for face to face, blended and online delivery?

Would you relish the opportunity to lead the Contextual Practice provision for the Dance & Musical Theatre courses at Britain’s first performing arts academy?

Working closely with our Course Leaders you will oversee, build upon, and develop a Contextual Practice provision that is engaging, insightful, and immersive. Leading a small team of Sessional Tutors and external markers, you will ensure our Dance & Musical Theatre graduates enter the profession as thoughtful, well-informed and well-rounded performers.

Your commitment to an innovative approach, your cultural range, your academic background and your conversance with the literary and theatrical canon and critical theory will mark you out as a strong candidate for the role. Experience in leading students through Practice-as-Research and independent performance projects would be desirable.

An appreciation of the fact that Italia Conti is, first and foremost, a training institution is germane to success in the post, so establishing a supportive environment for performers in this essential part of our Dance & Musical Theatre programmes is key. The role involves coordinating the Contextual Practice provision across our BA and CertHE courses and so the ability to work closely and autonomously with each our Course Leaders and other Heads of Department and an understanding of the nuances of each programme and its requirements is a fundamental part of the role.

Underpinning this will be a desire to support gifted students who may not necessarily have followed a traditional academic route, encouraging and enabling them to be their very best. Dedicated support for students with SEN is a key part of our offering at Italia Conti and you would be ably supported by our established SEN Tutor.

There could hardly be a more exciting time to join us at Italia Conti – in September 2022 we moved to a brand-new campus in Woking. We would love to hear from you if it is a challenge that would inspire you.

For further details of the post and of how to apply, visit our website via the 'Apply' button above.

The closing date for applications is Monday 31 August 2026, 6.00pm.

Candidates must have the right to work in the UK. Only applicants shortlisted for interview will be contacted.
