Specialist Technician (Learning & Teaching) Costume

We’re seeking an experienced Specialist Technician (Learning & Teaching) Costume to join the Technical Resources Team at Wimbledon College of Arts (WCA). This role will support innovative teaching, learning and creative practice across our Costume courses, helping students develop the technical, creative and professional skills required for careers in theatre, film and the wider creative industries.

Working collaboratively with academic and technical colleagues, you’ll provide specialist expertise, training and guidance across theatrical and film costume making, supporting students from initial concept through to the realisation of ambitious creative projects. You’ll contribute to an inclusive learning environment where craftsmanship, technical excellence and creative experimentation are at the heart of the student experience.

The role supports teaching across BA and MA Costume courses, working within specialist Costume Workshops and Studios. You’ll help students develop industry-standard skills in garment construction, pattern cutting, costume interpretation and working with a wide range of materials, enabling them to realise their creative vision while promoting safe and sustainable workshop practices.

As part of the Technical Resources Team, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance and development of specialist costume facilities, equipment and resources. You’ll deliver technical demonstrations, workshops and one-to-one support, provide constructive feedback on student work, contribute to technical teaching and formative assessment, and work closely with colleagues to ensure an outstanding learning environment.

About you
You’ll be an experienced costume practitioner with substantial knowledge of theatrical and film costume making, garment construction and specialist production techniques. A degree in costume, fashion, theatre, performance or a related discipline, and/or significant professional industry experience, is essential.

You’ll have excellent practical skills in womenswear, pattern cutting and working with fine fabrics such as silk, alongside a strong understanding of costume production workflows and workshop practices. Experience of supporting student learning, delivering technical instruction and developing practical skills is essential, while experience within Higher Education and knowledge of menswear would be advantageous.

You’ll be confident delivering technical demonstrations and training to students with varying levels of experience, communicating specialist techniques in an accessible and engaging way. Strong organisational skills, technical problem-solving abilities, excellent interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to workshop management are essential, together with a commitment to sustainability, collaboration and delivering an exceptional student experience.
